Right-thinking citizens absolutely DO care, James, that an actual terrorist bomber can hold down a tenured position as a university professor and do TV appearances instead of being tried for treason, convicted, and executed. Moreover, we don’t decide things “collectively” in this country; plenty of other countries would welcome you and all others who want to live that way. We are a republican nation specifically to prevent the tyranny of a democratic majority, so that individuals’ votes matter. We’re the only bastion of individual thought actually standing up proudly and defending it in the world today. But the world doesn’t want the preciouis gift of responsibililty, individuality and self-governance, hard-won at the barrel of a gun; they are sheep who like to be taken care of and dictated to by an authoritative adult figure. They want to know that their neighbor is living just as boring and mediocre a life as they are. No inequality allowed.
