Weekend Box Office: “Amazing Spider-Man” soars above competition, “Moonrise” and “To Rome” crack top 10

Even though "The Amazing Spider-Man" topped the chart, Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" and Woody Allen's "To Rome with Love" were the real box office stories of the post-4th of July weekend.“The Amazing Spider-Man” was number 1 at the box office this weekend, with $65m Friday through Saturday and $140m since its Tuesday opening. But you knew that would be the case. The real winners of the weekend were Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom” and Woody Allen’s “To Rome With Love,” both in modestly wide bows of 884 theaters and 806 theaters, respectively. The former has been hanging on the outer edge of the top 10 for several weeks, maintaining its box office tremendously well through each expansion (it fell just 5.8% from last weekend), having amassed $26.9m to date. “Moonrise Kingdom” should give “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” ($42m) a run for its money in the “Indie Success of the Summer” contest. As for the Allen film, Sony Pictures Classics expanded it much quicker than they did last summer’s “Midnight in Paris,” realizing that reviews and word-of-mouth were nowhere near as kind to this one. Whether “To Rome with Love” is on its way to an end-gross $12m or $25m is anybody’s guess, but it isn’t a flop.
