Friday Box Office: “Rock of Ages” and “That’s My Boy” bomb

Friday, June 16 Box Office Results

The opening Friday grosses for Tom Cruise’s “Rock of Ages” and Adam Sandler’s “That’s My Boy” were atrocious. Embarrassing. Disastrous. Dismal. You pick the catastrophic adjective and it applies. The former has some chance of garnering positive word-of-mouth and rebounding throughout the course of its run, but the latter will undoubtedly go down as one of the biggest bombs of the year. This summer movie season has seen its fair share of financial boons already, from “Dark Shadows” to “Battleship,” but this will probably go down as the bleakest weekend yet.

The sole bright spot was IFC’s respectable limited launch of the gussied-up mumblecore movie “Your Sister’s Sister,” directed by Lynn Shelton and starring Mark Duplass, Emily Blunt, and Rosemarie Dewitt. It made $31,000 on 13 screens — not a miracle, but a solid number from which they’ll be able to platform to a total gross of $1-3 million.
