Owen Wilson at center of The Coup

For the first time since he visited 19th century London in Shanghai Knights, Owen Wilson is set to kick ass again instead of chase it.

Wilson has signed on to star in The Coup, an action film to be helmed by Devil director John Erick Dowdle from a script he wrote with his brother Drew Dowdle. The film is said to be set in Southeast Asia, where an American family finds itself in the center of a bloody rebellion. Wilson will play the family patriarch who presumably finds himself spurred to violence in order to protect his wife and children.

Wilson, known more for his laid-back performances in comedies than in action films, has a full plate. He’s developing an HBO TV series and is set to star in three other movies, including the sequel to 2001’s Zoolander. In 2011 he received good critical notices for his starring role in Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, which received a Best Picture nomination.
