Weekend Box Office: Aveng-ier edition

Marvel's The AvengersIn yesterday’s box office report, I professed how tired I was of using Avengers images to head blog posts, but it’s impossible to avoid today. The team of Marvel superheroes earned another $100 million at the domestic box office this weekend, once again surpassing my personal prediction by a wide margin, and crossed the $1 billion mark internationally. In only 10 days of domestic release and less than three weeks of foreign release. There’s only one word for that: Insane.

On the specialty front, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Girl in Progress were able to creep into the top 10, both posting strong grosses on this Mother’s Day weekend. And while not top 10 material, Richard Linklater’s Bernie, starring Jack Black, had another nice expansion, raking in $200,000 from 36 sites.
