Viral Prometheus marketing evolves the Alien mythos

Fans of the Alien universe formed by Ridley Scott and James Cameron, among many others, have already been drooling at the marvelous trailers for this summer’s Prometheus. But viral marketing has also been playing a key role in building hype and anticipation for the film.

In February, a viral video was released featuring Guy Pearce as Peter Weyland, a visionary CEO and important name in the Alien mythos. Fans can also visit a Weyland Industries website, filled with “information” about the company and its products.

Now fans have perhaps the best viral treat yet: a promotional video for David, an android model played by Michael Fassbender that will be a central character in Prometheus. In the clip (see above), David assures potential buyers and Weyland investors that he is remarkably safe, charming, and even emotional.

Prometheus, starring Fassbender, Pearce, Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, and Idris Elba, follows a group of space explorers as they discover an ancient civilization. If the trailers are any indication, this doesn’t go well. Keep your eyes out for the xenomorphs and face-huggers of the Alien series. The film is directed by Scott and hits theaters June 8.
